Western Hemisphere
Class Requirements
* Please bring your social studies binder and a pencil each day.
*Participation in individual, small group, and large group work is expected. Learning in our room is not a spectator sport. ;)
*Chromebooks will be required daily.
Curriculum Information
We will study the many uses of maps, how to read and interpret these maps (not just for getting lost!), and create our own maps. We will also study Canada's past, its geography, and regions that make it unique. Latin America is defined as the countries of the western hemisphere impacted by Spanish and Portuguese colonization. We will study the history of Mexico and its ancient civilizations, the rainforest of Brazil, and the extreme geography found throughout this region.
We will use two class sets of textbooks, articles, maps, and websites to assist our learning.
Western Hemisphere Websites
Please use the very long list of helpful links arranged by category on my website: Room 711
About Mrs. Sullivan
I started teaching when I became a ski instructor at age 15. Since then, I've moved on from teaching kids to "make a pizza!" to helping my students understand their place in the world. I have been teaching (indoors!) since I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1996. My husband and I then spent two years living in southwestern Washington as he worked for the U.S. Forest Service at Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
We now have two sons (Riley, 16 and Owen a.k.a. "Sully", 14) and a super-sweet dog, Luna. We enjoy our time at the beach, in the woods, travelling, and cuddled on the couch with good books. I love teaching geography to students and am constantly striving to make our learning community better every day. Thanks for sharing your kids with us!
