Western hemisphere studies... A self-explanatory class title
In this class, we, well, study the Western Hemisphere of our planet. From ancient civilizations to modern day issues, any place in North or South America is fair game.
A breakdown of what to expect this year -
First Semester
*establishing classroom routines and conduct
*mapping skills - what makes a map a map?
*types of maps - climate, population, etc.
*"Mapping Lab" of Canada and the United States
*First People of Canada, including Inuit
*history of Canada from John Cabot to Stephen Harper
*regions of Canada and various Canada studies
*U.S. National Parks
Second Semester
*"Mapping Lab" of Latin America
*ancient civilizations of Latin America (including Aztec, Maya, and Inca)
*history of Mexico from Hernan Cortez to Enrique Pena Nieto
*spatial inequality in Mexico City, other concerns in urban areas
*reasons for immigration and emigration
*land-use conflict in the Amazon rainforest
*Great Lakes ecology study, including invasive species prevention
NOTE: Students in my 2nd hour class (AT) will experience a modified curriculum. We will learn about the same basic topics listed above, but in a different order and with supplemental studies. Students will not simply be asked to do more work, but to understand complex topics with sophistication and a broader understanding of the world. Parents, please take note of "2nd hour only" updates for specific information about your child's class work.
